2026 Overview

Recent figures show that over 123,000 households were in temporary accommodation as of June 2024, marking the highest levels recorded to date. The financial implications are also significant, with costs to local authorities estimated to have risen from £1.6 billion in 2022–23 to approximately £2.1 billion in 2023–24. These pressures have prompted ongoing discussion about the balance between emergency provision and long-term prevention efforts.

The conference explores a range of themes, including:

  • The use of bed and breakfast accommodation, particularly for families, and the implications of placements that exceed statutory time limits
  • The growing number of households placed outside their local area, and the social and logistical challenges this can present
  • The absence of a national homelessness strategy in England, in contrast to the devolved administrations, and the implications for coordinated policy development
  • Anticipated developments, including the Government’s planned homelessness strategy and a detailed housing plan expected in 2025, which aims to deliver 1.5 million new homes during the current Parliament

This conference offers a timely platform for local authorities, housing providers, charities, policymakers, and academics to engage in evidence-based dialogue, share best practice, and contribute to shaping the future of homelessness policy and provision in England.

The National Homelessness Conference 2026 explores innovative strategies for supporting people experiencing homelessness and preventing rough sleeping among those at risk.
