Overview

Managing people is one of the most important responsibilities any manager has – yet many managers find themselves leading people with little formal training or support. In many organisations, particularly smaller businesses or those with lean HR teams, line managers are increasingly responsible for key people decisions and day-to-day management activities. From recruitment and onboarding to communication, absence, performance and employee wellbeing, managers are expected to navigate a wide range of responsibilities while balancing operational pressures and team performance.

This practical course is designed as an introduction to the fundamentals of effective people management for managers without an HR background. Participants will gain a broad understanding of the manager’s role in employing and supporting people, explore the key stages of the employee lifecycle, and build confidence in handling common people situations fairly, consistently and effectively. Through practical examples, discussion and real-world scenarios, the course helps managers understand what good people management looks like, the risks of getting the basics wrong, and when to seek additional support or guidance.
