Overview

In 2024 the HMICFRS released a report outlining key recommendations to ensure better support for victims of stalking in response to the 2022 super complaint written by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust. Responses to stalking have been shown to be inadequate with a lack of understanding about what constitutes as stalking from public services. To cultivate effective responses to stalking an understanding of victim experiences, robust systems of victim support, collaboration across agencies and effective perpetrator interventions are needed.

  • 1 in 5 women and around 1 in 11 men aged 16 years and over has been a victim of stalking (ONS)
  • Only 5% of reports of stalking to the police in the year ending March 2022 resulted in a charge by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)
  • A recent study found that 94% of femicides had stalking in their antecedent history
  • 45% of stalking victims withdrew from the justice process and a further 41% saw no further police action on their complaints
