Overview

In 2022, the Government Property Function published the Government Property Strategy 2022-2030 and the Government Property Sustainability Strategy. Both provided public bodies with guidance for creating sustainable public estates while delivering savings and achieving better value for money. While providing standardised targets and planning advice is a step in the right direction, there is still much work to be done to achieve the aims and ambitions set out by these national strategies.  By sharing best practice, those working to update and improve public estates can build upon their existing successes and develop new strategies to regenerate existing sites, maximise revenue, and combat climate change.

  • The Government currently manages 142,965 properties with annual running costs of approximately £22 billion, shows the 2021-2022 State of Estates Report
  • Since 2010, the size of the central general-purpose estate has been reduced by 30%, having over £1bn in annual running costs, according to a 2022 report from the Government Property function
  • By 2023, the One Public Estate Partnership has created over 40,000 new jobs and raised £576 million in capital receipts, according to the Local Government Association
