Overview

In March 2023, Rishi Sunak announced that the Department for Education would be reviewing Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) statutory guidance, following concerns that children were being exposed to inappropriate content. It is currently mandatory to teach RSHE in all secondary schools in England, with the current curriculum covering content on a wide range of key topics, such as sexual relationships and online abuse. However, with the current controversies around the delivery of RSHE in schools, schools must work together to share best practice and develop an RSHE curriculum which is suitable and beneficial for all pupils.

  • 42% of respondents, to the Sex Education Forum’s survey in 2023, felt that their schools were not informing their parents enough about RSHE
  • In response to the SEF survey, 58% of students reported that they didn’t learn enough about today’s most pressing issues
  • 3 years after the Government introduced statutory RSHE, only 40% of young people rate their lessons as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ (SEF, 2022)
