Overview

The long-awaited NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, published in June 2023, set out a comprehensive vision for mitigating the growing staffing issues based around three principles: train, retain and reform. It identified a range of key challenges currently facing the sector, including the lack of sustainability within the workforce and the culture change around wellbeing and diversity needed in many areas. However, it also provided a pathway for improvement and solutions for NHS providers to implement moving forwarded. Trusts, primary care providers and Integrated Care Boards must work together to drive innovation in both recruitment and retention across the NHS and set in motion the key principles and strategies behind the workforce plan.

  • There are more than 1.2 million full-time equivalent staff working in NHS trusts in England, over 53,600 more people compared to a year ago, according to data published by the DHSC in February 2023
  • One quarter of NHS staff are of Asian, black or another minority ethnicity, the Nuffield Trust reported in 2022
  • The same report found that as of 2022, 1 in 13 posts were vacant in hospital and community services
  • According to NHS Digital in 2022, mental ill health accounts for over 20 per cent of sickness absence in the NHS
