Overview

In May 2022, the Ministry of Justice published a draft Victims Bill for pre-legislative scrutiny, committing to pass and implement a Victims Law. The bill includes measures to amplify victims’ voices and improve support for victims to recover from the impact of crime while strengthening transparency with criminal justice agencies. In order to support victims and drive improvements in victims’ services, robust partnerships across police, the criminal justice system and the voluntary sector must be formed so that practitioners can support victims more effectively. Through sharing and engaging with best practice across the public sector, practitioners can work to support victims of crime and their families.

  • In 2022/23, crimes of violence against the victim were the most likely offences to result in victims not supporting police action, according to the Home Office
  • According to research published by Victim Support in 2022, half of respondents reported an instance of domestic abuse at least twice before appropriate action was taken
  • 12% of respondents said that they didn’t feel appropriate action was ever taken (Victim Support, 2022)
  • 48% of Black and ethnic minority respondents felt that the police treated them differently because of their ethnic background or heritage
