Since the government’s announcement about schools reopening there has been a lot of questions, anxiety and stress for all school staff. Stress is part of modern-day life, and it pops up in all areas of our lives but undoubtedly in the current situation, many people are feeling this more. Promoting staff engagement and understanding around stress is key. It’s so crucial that schools train staff to recognise stress and how to cope with it. A healthy amount of stress in our lives can be a huge motivator in some situations. Stress also can’t simply be eliminated, and staff must be aware of this and have strategies in place to manage this.
So what strategies can we try? Stressful situations increase the level of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol in your body. When you feel stressed or tense, try going for a walk in the fresh air. Also doing some sort of physical activity each day with help and will improve your sleep too. Talking to someone about how you feel can be helpful as it can help release some of the built-up tension. It can also put your problems into perspective. Then finally take control of your stress by acknowledging it and learning how to find solutions. This could be writing a pros and cons list or breaking the problem down into manageable steps.
“It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.” Lou Holtz.
