The Covid-19 pandemic sparked delays in Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs). SARs are in place to identify what is hindering safeguarding work from being carried out effectively. The backlog of reviews was partly caused by carers and families of those in care showing reluctance to let professionals into their homes due to worries about contracting Covid-19.

A new SARs model was distributed in response to the issues created by the pandemic. The model was developed as an additional tool for Safeguarding Adult Boards to use to improve learning outcomes, resources, and turnaround time in a safe manner.

Dr Sheila Fish, Head of Learning Together at the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). Sheila heads the SCIE’s programme of audit and case review work. They have led the development of effective approaches to generate learning from case reviews across children’s and adult safeguarding since 2010.

Sheila discusses the new SARs model as well as the ethical and human rights issues that the pandemic has brought into focus at our Adult Safeguarding 2021 conference.
