Overview
The Department for Education (DfE) stated in 2022 that there were 45,940 care leavers in England. With the number of looked after children also steadily rising steadily each year (Office for National Statistics (ONS), 2023) it is becoming increasingly important to ensure that there are adequate services and support available to those leaving care.  As a response to this figure, the Children’s Commissioner launched a practical guide for care leavers, which included recommendations across areas such as education, mental health support and housing.  With these recommendations in mind, it is vital that those working with care leavers, come together to share best practice and ensure that care experienced young people leave with a sense of stability and positivity about their futures.

  • 30% of school leavers who were in care during 2022 were not in further or higher education, employment, or training 9 months after leaving school, as shown by Home for Good in 2022
  • New figures published in 2023 from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), show that there are 3710 18-20 care leaver households facing homelessness
  • 5,367 care leavers in London have an identified mental health need, according to DfE in 2022
