Overview
In recent years, there has been an increased focus on supporting employees from minority backgrounds through workplace allyship initiatives. With the country’s workforce becoming increasingly diverse, it is now more essential than ever to ensure that employees from all backgrounds feel safe and supported in their workplace. While EDI policies and allyship networks are becoming more and more popular in organisations, there is still much work to be done. Through sharing best practice, both employers and employees can build upon existing successes and develop new strategies to develop and foster a culture of allyship in their organisation.

  • The NHS workforce is more diverse than ever before, with staff from ethnic minority backgrounds making up almost a quarter of the overall workforce, according to the 2022 NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard report
  • The number of women in the civil service has increased over the past year, as has the number of employees identifying as part of the LGBTQ community, and the percent of employees declaring themselves as having a disability, data from a 2022 Civil Service research report shows
  • While 67% of employees consider themselves an ‘ally’ to those with identities different to their own, only 36% have spoken up when they have witnessed discrimination in the workplace, according to a 2022 research report from the Wates Group
  •  51% of organisations offer equality, diversity and inclusion training to all employees, according to a 2021 research report from Business in the Community
