The 2021 Waste Management Plan for England outlined the Government’s ambition for a circular waste economy, including a recycling target of 65% for municipal areas by 2035.

Local authorities are working hard to meet these targets and drive improvements in sustainability, using partnerships to develop waste management plans and innovative strategies to engage local communities. To support them, upcoming legislation from central Government proposes new ways of accessing funding for recycling services through extended producer responsibility.

The 2022 White Paper on mandatory digital waste tracking also promises to help councils increase efficiency and resource productivity. Local waste management providers must continue to work together and implement new technologies to work toward their waste management goals.

  • The UK household recycling rate fell from 46% in 2019 to 44.4% in 2020, but increased 1% in Wales according to Defra
  • According to WRAP’s winter 2021 report, 85% of UK residents now regularly recycle although contamination increased from last year
  • The Countryside Alliance found an 80% rise in rural fly-tipping during 2020.
