Overview

Flooding remains one of the most pressing and recurrent natural disasters affecting communities in the UK, with 5.2 million properties finding themselves located in flood risk areas according to data the Environment Agency. The increasing threat of climate change has also exacerbated the risk that faces local communities. As a consequence of this, the Government has announced a new six-year capital investment programme, which promises to commit to better protect 336,000 properties and avoid wider economic damage through 2,000 new flood defence projects. Local authorities must also work in partnership with local stakeholders, to develop proactive and sustainable flood action plans which reduce the human and economic costs of flooding.

  • As of 2023, 3.4 million properties are now at risk of surface water flooding (Environment Agency)
  • Expenditure on flood and coastal erosion risk management increased from £777 million in 2018, to £1.063 billion in 2021 (Office for National Statistics, 2023)
  • 25% of flooding occurs outside areas formally designated as being flood prone (Reach and Rescue)
