Overview

In January 2023, the Home Office published a review on Stalking Protection Orders (SPOs) outlining their impact since their introduction. While this report found that they were an effective tool in tackling stalking, it also highlighted that more work needs to be done to tackle stalking throughout the country. In order to support victims of stalking and drive improvements in support services, robust partnerships across police, the criminal justice system and the voluntary sector must be formed so that practitioners can support victims of stalking more effectively. Through sharing and engaging with best practice across the public sector, practitioners can work to support the safety of victims of stalking.

  • The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that 2.5 million people every year experience stalking in England and Wales
  • According to the Suzy Lamplugh trust, about 0.1% of stalking cases result in a conviction
  • 91% of respondents to a study by Sussex Stalking Support reported that they suffered from mental health problems following the experience of being stalked
