Overview

The UK Government has announced plans to replace all legacy benefits with one all-encompassing universal credit system by the end of 2024. Local authorities, housing associations and the voluntary sector must form robust partnerships to successfully support universal credit claimants. Through sharing and engaging with best practice across the public sector, practitioners can work to provide support to financially vulnerable households amidst the cost of living crisis.

  • In October 2023, there were 6.2 million people on Universal Credit
  • There was an average of 53,000 claims and 43,000 starts per week in October 2023
  • Universal Credit households with children accounted for half of all households with a payment in August 2023
  • The number of people on Universal Credit in the ‘no work requirements’ rose to 2.2 million as of October 2023

(Department for Work and Pensions, November 2023)
