In January 2023, the Ministry of Justice published their Female Offender Strategy Delivery Plan outlining their ambitions to improve outcomes for women in the criminal justice system. The strategy details how tackling reoffending and supporting women leaving prison are crucial in ensuring long-term success for female offenders. In order to support female offenders and drive improvements in support services, robust partnerships across police, the criminal justice system and the voluntary sector must be formed so that practitioners can support women in the criminal justice system more effectively. Through sharing and engaging with best practice across the public sector, practitioners can work to improve outcomes and provide support for female offenders.
- Women were sent to prison on 5,164 occasions in the year to March 2023 – either on remand or to serve a sentence
- Many female offenders have dependent children and an estimated 17,000 children are affected by maternal imprisonment every year
- 53% of women in prison report having experienced emotional, physical or sexual abuse as a child
- Only half of women left prison with settled accommodation in the year to March 2023
