Cultural capital is the essential knowledge all children need to prepare them for future success in life. It is included as part of the Ofsted framework, which states that all educational settings need to provide learners with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to progress.
The Royal Shakespeare Company recognise the importance of culture and the arts in helping children develop vital learning skills. Through running workshops, they provide access to culture that would not otherwise be available to many disadvantaged children.
Jackie O’Hanlon is the Director of Learning and National Partnerships at the RSC. She shared how RSC workshops and plays helped schools develop theatre-based learning approaches. These approaches highlighted the value of incorporating culture in learning with directly improved students’ storytelling abilities and language development
