The need for children’s services has dramatically increased in recent years, with these services now receiving one contact every 4.8 seconds. One in five care leavers are homeless within two years of leaving care, while one in two care leavers are not in education, employment, or training. Children’s services must be improved on a nationwide level to ensure that they can provide the right support for young communities.
Steve Walker is the director for the Strengthening Families Protecting Children Programme (SFPC) within Leeds City Council, as well as the director of the Leeds Relational Practice Centre (LRPC). He emphasises the importance of including families in a ‘Family Valued’ approach that implements strong relationships between service users and service providers.
In this video, Walker discusses children’s services within a Leeds-based context, exploring why children’s services need to be improved and how a whole-city approach can secure long-term change. Focusing on practice and outcomes over performance, he favours working with families rather than doing things to them or for them.
