Following the Grenfell Tower fire on 14 June 2017, the government commissioned the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. The 2018 report highlighted the need to transform the fire and building safety regime. It recommended minimum requirements around fire safety that need to be met when local authorities are reviewing planning applications and will require input from those with relevant expertise.
Neil O’Connor is Director of Building Safety Programmes at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Since 2017, Neil has been leading policy on building safety following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
