Going to university is a fun and exciting time for most students – but it comes with unique challenges and stresses and can be extremely difficult for many.
The Government is investing £2.3 billion extra funding into mental health services by 2023/24 through the NHS Long Term Plan, and an additional £500 million this year to address NHS waiting times. £13 million has been allocated to support young adults (18-25 years), including HE students, to help bridge the gap between children’s and adult mental health services.
Michelle Donelan was appointed Minister of State for Universities at the Department of Education on 13 February 2020. She was previously Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury) from 29 July 2019 to 13 February 2020. She was also an unpaid Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Education covering the maternity leave of Kemi Badenoch MP from 4 September 2019 to 13 February 2020.
In this session from the Student Mental Health Conference 2021, Michelle outlined the Government’s approach to student mental health. She discussed the impact of Covid-19 on student mental health, funding for national and local initiatives and best practice across higher education.
